This recipe uses allspice as a garnish. If you prefer, you can use a mixture of white pepper, paprika, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom.

1 large onion, chopped

5 cups water, plus more as needed

1/3 cup dry basmati rice

2 cups dry brown lentils

2 garlic cloves, crushed

1 pound fresh spinach, coarsely chopped

1 juice of 1 lemon

1 chopped fresh parsley for garnish

1 ground cumin for garnish

1 ground allspice for garnish
