If you are using sour milk, buttermilk or sour cream, add a half teaspoon of baking soda with the baking powder.

Instead of all-purpose flour, try using cake flour. It gives a much nicer texture and fluffiness. Also, you should be using a 2:1 ratio of baking powder to baking soda.

You want to make sure your baking powder is good. If, you don't bake and you have some way in the back of the cupboard, someone left there...throw it out.

I find if you let the box mix set for about 5 to 10 Min. and give it time to rise you get the results you looking for
