French Pear Cake with Crème Fraîche

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
1 cup white granulated sugar
2 large eggs (at room temperature)
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp fine salt
1/2 cup sour cream
3 pears (ripe but still firm, peeled or unpeeled, halved and cored)
1/4 cup white granulated sugar
1/3 cup flaked almonds (optional)
Crème Fraîche (alternately whipped cream or ice cream)
