1 cup super-fine sugar
3 1/2 cups warm water
1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice (6–8 lemons) – strained
1 750-ml bottle Appleton Estate V/X rum
1 1/2 cups cognac
1/4 cup peach brandy (apricot brandy is a workable substitute)
