There are lots of variations of this drink, some use vodka and some use gin. Salty Dogs are a refreshingly tart and salty cocktail that are perfect for warm, sunny days. Historically, Salty Dogs were prepared without ice. But over time, it became more common to serve them chilled over ice cubes or crushed ice in a salt-rimmed highball glass. The exact history of this cocktail is uncertain, but comedian George Jessel is thought to have created it by whimsically mixing together vodka, grapefruit juice and salt in a champagne glass. After a first taste, he said, "That drink was a salty dog!"
