renee's derby mint julep
With less than a month until the 2021 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, I pulled out my favorite recipe for the Derby Mint Julep. And...they're off! This summertime refresher stirs up in mere minutes. I use spearmint because that’s what I have growing in pots on the deck but whatever mint you like or have on hand will work. Traditionally a splash of spring water is used, but I like the added bit of effervescence from the club soda.

-
1Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a glass and top with simple syrup or sugar, I prefer the superfine sugar – it helps to break down the mint leaves but suit yourself.

-
3Add the bourbon to the glass and stir.
-
4Fill with crushed ice, give another quick stir, and top with a splash of club soda.
