This is the way I've made Sangria since the 1960's.

Ingredients For classic sangria (sallye)

1 lgorange

1 lglemon

1-1/2 cgood quality rum

1/2 cgranulated sugar

1 bottlegood quality red wine (750 ml)

1 corange juice (fresh if available)

1 sprigmint (optional)
How To Make classic sangria (sallye)

1Slice orange, lime and lemon into thin slices. Set aside Pour rum and sugar into large glass pitcher. Stir gently until sugar dissolves. Add fruit slices to the pitcher. Place in fridge to chill for 2 hours.

2When ready to serve, remove pitcher from fridge. Crush fruit slightly using wooden muddle or spoon. Gently stir in orange juice and wine until well blended. You may add more sugar for extra sweetness if desired.

3Best served while still chilled. May be served over crushed ice, but it will dilute the flavor.
