portuguese sweet rice (arroz doce)

You cannot go to any gathering around here without someone bringing the sweet rice. This recipe is a sweet treat, with a rich & creamy texture. I've also attached a photo of my little one enjoying a taste of her momma's sweet rice :)

Ingredients For portuguese sweet rice (arroz doce)

  • 1 c
    white rice (i use medium grain rice. this is my preference, but feel free to use what you have on hand).
  • 1 c
    water
  • 3 c
    milk
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1
    lemon rind
  • 1/2 tsp
    vanilla
  • 3
    egg yolks
  • cinnamon

How To Make portuguese sweet rice (arroz doce)

    Bring water, milk, butter, and rice to a simmer. Add lemon peel, sugar, and pinch of salt.

    Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes or until rice is tender.

    Remove from heat. Add in egg yolks one at a time, mixing after each addition. Stir in vanilla.

    Return to heat and bring to a boil. Cook over low heat for an additional 5 minutes.

    Remove lemon rind. Pour into a serving platter or individual dishes and sprinkle generously with cinnamon!
