This apple pie gets a savory zip from fresh cheddar cheese and crunchy bacon crumble topping. What a tasty and simple dessert to make. This is one of my husbands favorite. I posted this recipe in Sept. on another site... it was well received there- hope you like it too! I'll post the crust separate in "Our Favorite Pie Shells".

Ingredients For cheezy apple bacon crunch pie

  • PIE:
  • 5-6 md
    apples, granny smith or jonathan or mcintosh
  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    apple pie spice
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 3 Tbsp
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 c
    vanilla yogurt
  • CHEESE CRUST:
  • 1 1/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 c
    frozen butter, cut into cubes then frozen
  • 1/2 tsp
    granulated sugar
  • 3-4 Tbsp
    ice water
  • 1/3 c
    shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • TOPPING:
  • 1 c
    cooked crumbled bacon,chopped fine
  • 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/3 c
    light brown sugar,packed
  • 3 Tbsp
    cold butter
  • 1/2 c
    sharp shredded cheddar cheese

How To Make cheezy apple bacon crunch pie

    Heat oven to 375^ Pie Filling: Combine flour,sugar and spices and remaining ingredient in a large bowl, mix to coat evenly; set aside.

    Cheese Crust: Place frozen butter cubes into a food processor. Process until smaller chunks appear, do not mush. Put in the cheese, flour and sugar on top of butter. Process until mixture turns into a coarse crumb texture. Add the ice water 1 Tablespoon at a time while the processor is running -until the dough becomes slightly clumpy. Press a bit together with your fingers- if still crumbly add a little more water. Place contents on a counter and press into a round disk shape. Wrap up in plastic wrap. Chill for 45 minutes. Remove let rest for 15 minutes. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Fit crust into 9-inch pie pan. flute edges. Spoon apple filling into crust.

    Crumble Topping: Combine flour, brown sugar and cold butter. Mix together with a pastry blender until pea sized crumbs form, Sprinkle over apple filling.

    Bake at 375^ for 50 minutes or until apple are tender and filling bubbles. Remove from oven and sprinkle combine cheese and bacon pieces evenly over top of pie. Return to oven and bake until cheese melts and apples are tender.
