Apple Pie is an all time favorite in America. This one crust version is crafted after the Dutch Apple Pie...but using cooking oil instead of butter. Surprisingly, you can omit butter and yield absolutely delicious results. The crust is easy, since it is a no roll/press in type. You do need to partially pre-bake before filling and re-baking. Sauteeing the Apples makes them more moist and cooked through. The streusel is not as crunchy as it would be with butter...but hey....it's really about the apples and a good crust! This is a totally Vegan friendly recipe that will please EVERYONE!

Ingredients For apple streusel pie (no butter)

  • FOR THE CRUST
  • 1 1/3 c
    all purpose flour
  • 3/8 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/3 c
    cooking oil
  • 2 Tbsp
    ice water
  • FOR THE FILLING
  • 4 lg
    tart apples, peeled, cored, sliced about 1/2 inch
  • 1 Tbsp
    cooking oil
  • 3 Tbsp
    apple juice
  • 3/4 c
    sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    all purpose flour
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • FOR THE TOPPING
  • 1/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/4 c
    dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 4 tsp
    cooking oil
  • FOR THE GLAZE
  • 1/2 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1+ tsp
    water

How To Make apple streusel pie (no butter)

    In a medium bowl, mix the dry ingredients for the crust. Add the oil and use a pastry blender to work in. Add the ice water and stir with a fork just until the dough starts to come together.

    Press the dough pieces in to a 9 inch pie pan using your fingers. Cover the pie crust with non-stick foil (non-stick side touching dough). Fill the foil covered crust with dry beans or pie weights.

    Bake the crust in a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 375 degrees and bake 10 minutes longer. Remove from oven and cool a bit before carefully removing the foil and beans.

    While the crust is baking, prepare the apples. In a large fry pan heat the 1 Tbsp oil (med/hi heat) and saute the apple slices for about 7 minutes. Stir often. Add the apple juice and cook 1 -2 more minutes and remove from heat. Fold in the sugar and other dry ingredients, which have been pre-mixed. Set aside.

    For the streusel topping, mix the ingredients and set aside.

    Assemble the pie by filling the cooled pie crust with the apple filling and using a fork to distribute the apples evenly. Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the apples. Cover the crust with a pie shield to protect from burning.

    Bake pie in a 375 degree oven for 35 minutes. Reduce the heat to 325 degrees and bake an additional 20 minutes.

    Remove pie from oven and cool on a rack for 20-30 minutes. Prepare the glaze by adding enough cold water to the powdered sugar to achieve just the right consistency to drizzle over the baked pie.

    Cool pie completely (about 3 hours) before serving. This pie is perfect without whipped cream or ice cream.
