I never cared for oats on my Apple Betty or apple crisp. This is delicious! For a variety, I add some chopped walnuts or pecans and substitute the apple juice with orange juice. It's apple picking time!

Test Kitchen Tips
To ensure nothing spilled over (and for a pretty picture), we ended up using an 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 pan. If you use an 8x8 or 9x9 pan, just put a baking dish underneath to catch any overflow.
  • Oven set to preheat.
    1
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Cinnamon sugar sprinkled into a baking dish.
    2
FILLING: In a small mixing bowl, mix cinnamon and sugar together. In an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking pan, add a single layer of the sugar and cinnamon mixture, do not grease the pan.
  • Layering apples and cinnamon sugar.
    3
Begin layering sliced apples, sprinkling a cinnamon/sugar layer between each layer of apple slices.
  • All sliced apples and cinnamon sugar layered into the baking dish.
    4
Once apple slices are at the top of the pan, cover with a final layer of cinnamon/sugar mixture.
  • Pouring apple juice and vanilla extract over apples.
    5
Mix vanilla extract and apple cider/juice in a measuring cup. Pour over apple slices.
  • Grated butter in flour and sugar.
    6
TOPPING: Place flour and sugar into a small mixing bowl, blend well. Grate the cold stick of butter. Start with the wrapper on the bottom portion. Begin grating butter with a flat grater over the bowl. Keep sliding wrapper down to grate the butter into flour/sugar mixture until the grated stick of butter is all in the mixture. Use a pastry cutter and blend ingredients together until crumbly.
  • Apple crisp baking in the oven.
    7
Cover the apples with the topping, sprinkling all over. Bake in preheated 400 degree F. oven 25 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly. Check and don't burn.
  • Apple Crisp on a plate with vanilla ice cream.
    8
Cool and serve. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you wish.
