I usually make this recipe for Christmas (using the green cherries) & for Valentine's Day (using the red cherries). These are real easy to make & very delicious.

Ingredients

  • cup 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • cup 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • cup 1 cup butter
  • - 3 eggs
  • cup 1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • teaspoon 3/4 teaspoon bakingpowder
  • teaspoon 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • jar 1-6 ounce jar (red or green) maraschino cherries, drained & chopped (reserving 1/4 cup liquid)
  • cup 1/2 - 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • cup 2 cups powdered sugar
  • tablespoon 2 -4 tablespoon butter, softened

How To Make maraschino cherry-walnut bars

  • Step 1
    Lightly grease a 13x9x2- inch baking pan; set aside. In a large bowl, combine flour & granulated sugar, cut in 1 cup butter until crumbly. Press into prepared pan. Bake in a 350 degree F. oven for 20 minutes.
  • Step 2
    Meanwhile, in a medium bowl stir together eggs, brown sugar, baking powder, salt & vanilla. Add cherries & nuts, Spread on top of baked crust. Bake 25 minutes more. Cool on wire rack.
  • Step 3
    Combine powdered sugar, tablespoons butter & enough of reserved cherry liquid (3-4 tablesoons) to make icing of spreading consistency. Spread or pipe over cooled bars.
