Momma made lots of cookies, &, these were some of our favorites. When we came home from school, we always knew when she made these cookies by the smell of molasses when we walked up on the porch.

Ingredients For old fashioned molasses cookies

  • 1 c
    shortening
  • 3 1/2 c
    sifted all purpose flour
  • 2/3 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    molasses
  • 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    ginger
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves

How To Make old fashioned molasses cookies

    Cream shortening & sugar together until light & fluffy.

    Mix in molasses & buttermilk.
  • 3
    Add sifted dry ingredients. Chill dough.

    Roll out to about 1/8 inch thickness & cut in desired shapes with a floured cookie cutter.

    Bake on an greased baking sheet at 375º for 8 to 10 minutes. (Baking time may vary with size of cookies)
