Ingredients For date bars

3/4 cevaporated milk

1 pkg(8 ounces) chopped dates

2 Tbspsugar

1 tspvanilla

1/2 cfirmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cbutter, softened

1 cflour
-
3/4 cquick-cooking oats

1/2 tspsalt
-
1/2 tspbaking soda

1/2 tspcinnamon

1/3 ccoarsely chopped walnuts (optional)
How To Make date bars

1Combine evaporated milk, dates, sugar and vanilla in medium saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring, until thickened (8 to 10 minutes). Stir on walnuts; remove from heat and cool.

2Sift the flour, salt, cinnamon and baking soda together; add oats. Beat brown sugar and butter on medium speed in large mixer bowl until creamy (1 to 2 minutes). Add flour mixture and stir until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 1 cup.

3Press remaining crumbs into a greased 8 inch square baking pan. Spread date filling over crust. Top with 1 cup of reserved crumbs.

4Bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. Cut into bars.
