I have been using this recipe for my Christmas cookies for over 20 years. They are so yummy with lots of vanilla flavor.

Cutout cookies are a favorite at Christmas and this is a simple recipe your family will love. The cookies have a delicious buttery vanilla flavor. They're tasty on their own but go crazy with decorating too. A fun cookie to have kids help in the kitchen with.

  • 1 c
    butter, room temperature
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1
    egg
  • 2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2 2/3 - 3 c
    all-purpose flour

To make these even easier to make, roll the dough out between two pieces of parchment paper before cutting. Cut the shapes out on the parchment paper. Then remove the dough around the cutouts. You can bake the cookies directly on parchment paper if you'd prefer.
  • Butter and sugar in a mixing bowl.

    Cream the butter and sugar.
  • Eggs and vanilla added to the bowl.

    Blend in the egg and vanilla.
  • Flour added to the bowl.

    Add the flour and mix well.
  • Dough wrapped in plastic wrap ready to chill.

    Cover in plastic wrap and chill for at least an hour.
  • Rolling out the cookie dough.

    Roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Cutting shapes out of the cookie dough.

    Cut out shapes with your favorite cookie cutters. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Cookies on a baking sheet.

    Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Cookies with the edges slightly brown.

    Bake until light brown, about 8 minutes.
  • Decorating the cooled cookies.

    Ice when cooled with your favorite vanilla cookie glaze or icing.
