Ingredients For maw maw's gingerbread

  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    dark karo syrup
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/8 -1/4 tsp
    (pinch) salt
  • 1/2 c
    hot water
  • 1/2 c
    milk
  • 2 tsp
    ground ginger
  • 2 tsp
    allspice, ground
  • 2 tsp
    cinnamon, ground
  • 2 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1
    egg

How To Make maw maw's gingerbread

    Mix flour and spices together.

    In separate bowl, pour hot water over soda. Mix.
  • 3
    Add remaining ingredients to the flour mixture, then add water mixture. Mix until well blended. Pour into lightly greased 8'x8' square cake pan. Bake at 350F for approximately 25 minutes until toothpick inserted in cake comes out clean.
