delicious hot milk sponge cake

This sponge cake is VERY good used for strawberry shortcake. The recipe was given to me by an elderly neighbor in NC in 1972. It was my husbands favorite cake.

Ingredients For delicious hot milk sponge cake

  • 4 lg
    eggs well beaten
  • 2 c
    granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1 c
    milk, 2%
  • 1 c
    crisco (less 1 tbsp)
  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE 2 CUPS OF SELF RISING FLOUR FOR THE LAST THREE INGREDIENTS IF YOU PREFER.

How To Make delicious hot milk sponge cake

    Preheat oven to 350* Lightly grease and flour a 9x12 pan.

    Put milk and shortening in a sauce pan and heat on medium heat to boil. Remove from heat.

    Add sugar, gradually to well beaten eggs, beat well. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Mix hot milk mixture immediately to the flour mixture. Add vanilla mix well.

    Pour into a prepared 9x12 pan and bake at 350* until a toothpick comes out clean. About 30 min.
