I thought this was my grandma's recipe but it is actually her mother's, which would make it my great grandma's recipe! A very hardy, moist cake which really needs no frosting.

Ingredients For applesauce cake

2 csugar

1 cshortening
-
2 chot applesauce

3 1/2 tspbaking soda

4 tspcocoa powder

1 cchopped raisins
-
2/3 cchopped nuts

3 1/2 cflour

1 tspcinnamon

1/2 tspground cloves
How To Make applesauce cake

1Dissolve baking soda and cocoa in enough hot water (a couple of tablespoons or so) to make a thick paste.

2Cream together sugar, shortening, applesauce, and baking soda/cocoa mixture.

3In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon and cloves.

4Combine creamed mixture and dry mixture with a wooden spoon; stir in raisins and nuts.

5Grease and flour two 9 inch square cake pans and place half of the cake batter in each pan.

6Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted into middle of cake comes out clean.
