These are my grand-kids favorite, soft sugar cookie that their great grand-mama made every year.

Ingredients For old fashion sugar cookies

4 1/2 call purpose flour

2 tspbaking powder

1 tspbaking soda

1/2 tspsalt

1/2 tspground nutmeg

1 1/4 cshortening
-
2 csugar
-
2 lgeggs, beaten

1 tspvanilla

1/2 tsplemon extract

1 cbuttermilk or sour milk*
How To Make old fashion sugar cookies

1*To make sour milk, combine 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar and enough milk to make 1 cup. Let stand 5 minutes.

2Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. In an large bowl beat shortening for 30 seconds, add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla, and lemon extract and beat well. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternating to shortening mixture, beating till well mixed. Divide in half. Cover and chill at least 3 hours or till easy to handle.

3For large cookies, roll dough 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds with a 3 inch cookie cutter. For small cookies, roll dough 3/8 inch thick and cut into rounds with a 2 inch cookie cutter. Place 2 1/2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with additional sugar.

4Bake in a 375* oven for 10 to 12 minutes or till done. Remove and cool. Makes 24 large or 48 small cookies.
