This is a recipe that came about because of my love of all things lemon! My kids and grandkids love snickerdoodles (don't we all!). One night I was playing around and thought I want to make a lemon cookie. I couldn't find a recipe that I liked so decided that I would experiment and this is what I came up with! Hope you all like them. p.s. my brother-in-law says I am a goddess of the kitchen when I make these, lol!

Blue Ribbon Recipe

These are wonderful cookies kissed with just the right amount of lemon. We couldn't walk away from the plate. The lemon flavor is there but it's not overpowering. Thin and chewy, it's a cookie for any occasion.

How To Make lemony doodles

Test Kitchen Tips
If you're having an issue rolling the dough, chill it for a little bit and it will be easier to work with.
  • Shortening, eggs, and sugar creamed together.
    1
Cream together shortening, eggs, and sugar until creamy.
  • Dry ingredients combined in a bowl.
    2
In a separate bowl, mix together flour, lemon zest, and all other dry ingredients. (Set aside the lemon for later use.)
  • Dry ingredients added to wet ingredients.
    3
Add dry ingredient to creamed mixture.
  • Lemon juice and sugar combined in a bowl.
    4
For lemon sugar, in a small bowl mix granulated sugar and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly.
  • Rolling balls of dough in sugar.
    5
Form dough into balls using a generous teaspoonful. Roll into lemon sugar to coat.
  • Dough balls on a cookie sheet.
    6
These cookies do spread while baking. Place balls on an ungreased cookie sheet allowing space in between the cookies. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes, watching carefully (ovens differ).
