Got this from a friend in Atlanta! So, so good and good for you, too! Try this...substitute dried cranberries for the dates and waluts instead of the chocolate. I did and it was awesome!

Ingredients For heart smart cookies

  • 6 Tbsp
    butter, unsalted
  • 3/4 c
    packed, light brown sugar
  • 1/3 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/3 c
    whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 1/2 c
    oats, regular
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1
    egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 c
    dates, chopped and pitted
  • 3 oz
    coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate

How To Make heart smart cookies

    Preheat oven to 350* Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat, add brown sugar, Stir until smooth.

    In a medium bowl, combine both flours, baking soda, oats, and salt.

    Combine butter mixture with dry ingredients, and add egg, vanilla, and dates. Fold in chocolate. Batter will be stiff.

    Mix well, spoon by tablespoon onto lightly greased baking sheets.

    Bake for 12 minutes or until tops are dry to touch. Makes 32 cookies.
