My mom made these a lot when I was young. I'm not sure where she got the recipe, but we kids loved them. I still like them.

Ingredients For halfway bars

1 cshortening

1/2 cbrown sugar, firmly packed

1/2 csugar

2egg yolks

1 Tbspcold water

1/2 Tbspbaking soda

2 call purpose flour

6 ozchocolate chips

2egg whites

1 cbrown sugar, firmly packed
How To Make halfway bars

1Cream the shortening, brown sugar and white sugar until well mixed. Beat in the egg yolks and water until incorporated.

2Mix the soda and flour together. Gradually add to first ingredients until all the flour is mixed in.

3Pat the cookie base into a 13" x 9" cake pan.

4Beat the egg whites until stiff. Add 1 cup brown sugar until well mixed. Spread over the top of the cookie base. DO NOT touch sides of the pan.

5Bake at 325 degrees until golden brown, about 35 minutes.
