It's called 4 in 1 because you can divide the dough and add a variety of things to get different results. I live alone and do not need a couple dozen of the SAME cookie:-) Adding a 1/2 tsp of almond extract along with the vanilla is one of my favorite variations. Ingredients For four-in-one cookies

1 cshortening or margarine, softened

1 cgranulated sugar

1 cbrown sugar, firmly packed

2eggs

1/2 tspvanilla

1 1/4 csifted all purpose flour

1 tspbaking soda

1/2 tspsalt

3 cuncooked oats

1 cadd on of your choice
How To Make four-in-one cookies

1Beat shortening, sugars, eggs and vanilla together until creamy.

2Sift together flour, soda and salt and add to creamed mixture; blend well.

3Stir in oats and shape to form 1-inch balls.

4Place on greased cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart.

5Bake in preheated moderate oven (350) 12 to 15 minutes.

6Cool about 2 minutes, then remove cookies from cookie sheet.

7For variety, add 1 cup of... raisins, salted peanuts, semi-sweet chocolate pieces or flaked or shredded coconut with the oats.
