  Add baking soda to water.

  Cream sugar and shortening, add molasses, then water, egg and remaining ingredients.

  Add enough flour to make a nice thick dough.

  Chill several hours or overnight.

  Roll out and cut into 3\" rounds.

  Bake at 400 for 8 minutes or until done and then sprinkle with sugar.
