This is a great cookie for the holiday's because of the color the cherries give the cookies.The cherries give the cookies a nice blend of sweetness without being too sweet.

1 cpacked brown sugar

3/4 cshortening

1 tspvanilla

1/4 cchopped maraschino cherries

2 csifted all-purpose flour

1/2 tspbaking soda

1/2 tspcream of tartar

1/2 tspsalt
How To Make fancy cherry-pecan cookies

1Beat brown sugar, shortening, egg, and vanilla in a large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until fluffy. Stir in pecans and cherries.

2Sift together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt in medium bowl, add by 1/2 cupsful to shorteding mixture, beating well after each addition.

3Divide dough in half. Place on sheet of waxed paper, shape into a log. refrigerate until firm.

4Preheat oven to 400 degrees, cut dough into 1/8" thick slices. Place on a ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 6-8 minutes or until golden brown . Cool 1-2 minutes on cookie sheet . Remove to wire rack , cool completely.
