This recipe is mixed on top the stove, all in one pan and baked. I try to cut down on the amount of sugar in most of my recipes so for this one: I use 2 cups of brown sugar, the recipe calls for 2 1/4 cups. I also decrease the flour by 2 tablespoons and salt by 1/4 teaspoon.

Ingredients For congo squares

  • 2/3 c
    shortening
  • 2 1/4 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 3/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 3
    eggs, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2 c
    semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c
    nuts, chopped

How To Make congo squares

  • 1
    Combine flour, baking powder and salt, set aside.
  • 2
    Melt shortening, stir in brown sugar. Cool slightly.

    Add dry ingredients gradually with eggs.
  • 4
    Stir in rest of ingredients.

    Put into a greased and floured 9x13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
