This recipe was originally taken by my great-grandmother from the Ladies Page of The Dothan Eagle on December 11, 1941. The recipe claims (and my sailor brother can agree) that these pack and travel well to distant service members!

Ingredients For chocolate walnut surprises

1 cbutter, softened

2 csugar

4 lgeggs

1/2 cheavy cream

2 call purpose flour

1 cwalnuts, chopped

4chocolate, unsweetened squares, melted

1/2baking powder

2 tspvanilla extract

1/2 tspsalt

1 boxpowdered sugar
How To Make chocolate walnut surprises

1Cream butter and sugar. Beat in melted chocolate, vanilla and eggs. Beat in remaining ingredients, except walnuts or powdered sugar.

2Line baking pan with waxed paper. Pour batter into pan. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Bake at 350F for 25 minutes.

3Allow to cool in pan, then cut into bars. Roll bars in powdered sugar.
