- CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:

1/2 cbutter, room temperature

1/4 cshortening

1/3 cunsweetened cocoa powder

2 cconfectioners' sugar

How To Make buttermilk cookies with chocolate buttercream frosting

1For the cookies: in a bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.

2Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk and mix well.

3Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.

4Combine the frosting ingredients; beat until smooth. Frost the cooled cookies. Top with chopped nuts if desired.
