These spicy cookie bars were served in the Indiana governor's mansion when Otis Bowen was governor of the state. Beth, his wife, published many delicious recipes in local Indiana newspapers back in those years.

  • SPICY COOKIE BARS:
  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 1 c
    water
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1 lg
    egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1 3/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1 tsp
    allspice
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves
  • 1 c
    chopped walnuts
  • AFTER BAKING BARS SPRINKLE TOP WITH:
  • 2-3 Tbsp
    powdered sugar

How To Make beth bowen's spicy cookie bars

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9 by 13 inch pan and set aside. In a saucepan bring the water and raisins to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Allow to col to lukewarm.

    Meanwhile mix shortening, egg, and sugar together. Set aside. In another bowl stir together all remaining unused ingredients except nuts and powdered sugar. Stir in raisins and shortening mixture. Finally stir in nuts.

    Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 15-18 minutes. When cool dust with powdered sugar and cut into 24 bars.
