My mom used to make the best brownies in Texas! Oh my gosh. They were soooo good. All four of us kids loved her brownies so much. I am going to share her recipe with all of you. They should be in the Texas Hall of Fame, lol. Just make sure to follow directions carefully.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

Made with simple ingredients, these fluffy, cake-like brownies melt in your mouth. They're similar to a Texas sheet cake. So, not a traditional fudge-like brownie, but equally delicious. Buttermilk helps to keep them super moist. The fudgy chocolate icing on top is wonderful. Have a glass of milk handy to wash a slice down.

Ingredients For mom's best ever brownies

  • BROWNIE MIXTURE
  • 2 stick
    butter
  • 1 c
    boiling water
  • 4 Tbsp
    unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 c
    granulated sugar
  • 2 c
    all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 2 lg
    eggs
  • 1 1/2 c
    chopped walnuts or pecans, divided
  • BROWNIE ICING
  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 4 Tbsp
    milk
  • 4 Tbsp
    unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 - 2 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1/2 c
    chopped walnuts or pecans

How To Make mom's best ever brownies

  • Prepare a baking dish while the oven preheats.

    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a baking pan by greasing and flouring a 9x13x2 inch pan (or spray the pan with non-stick spray).
  • Add butter, boiling water, and cocoa to a saucepan.

    Combine 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of boiling water, and 4 Tbsp cocoa in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil.
  • Combine flour, sugar, and salt.

    Mix 2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, and salt together.
  • Add hot butter mixture to the flour.

  • Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and add eggs.

    Dissolve 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1 tsp baking soda. Add 2 eggs.
  • Add buttermilk mixture to the batter.

  • Mix in chopped nuts.

  • Pour batter into the baking dish.

  • Bake for 30 - 35 minutes.

    When the cake is done, start to prepare the icing. Prepare the icing by melting butter, milk, and cocoa in a small saucepan. Once combined, whisk in powdered sugar.
  • Take off the heat and add vanilla extract.

    Remove from heat and add vanilla extract.
  • Spread icing over the cake and sprinkle with nuts.

    Spread icing over the brownies and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of chopped nuts. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
