Ingredients For chocolate bars (oven version)

  • 1 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 c
    butter or margarine
  • 1/4 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    grated orange or lemon peel
  • FILLING
  • 1 c
    semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • TOPPING
  • 3
    eggs
  • 3/4 c
    granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice or 3 tbsp. orange juice
  • 1 Tbsp
    grated orange or lemon peel
  • 1 dash
    nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • powdered sugar, for garnish
  • EQUIPMENT
  • pregreased 8-inch square baking pan

How To Make chocolate bars (oven version)

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Measure flour and baking powder into a bowl.

    Add butter and, either with pastry blender or fingers, blend butter into flour mixture until consistency of cornmeal.

    Add powdered sugar and orange or lemon peel.

    Press mixture evenly onto bottom of a pre-greased 8-inch square baking pan.

    Prebake crust for about 7 minutes at 350 degrees F.

    Spread chocolate chips over hot crust.

    As soon a chips melt, spread chocolate evenly over crust. If chips don't melt quickly, put pan back in the oven for a few minutes.

    Combine all remaining ingredients in a bowl.

    Mix thoroughly.

    Pour mixture over chocolate layer.

    Bake at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes or until top is lightly browned.
