This recipe comes from my grandmother's niece (Violet) and was handed down to my mother. Violet was a great cook, so I would imagine this cake is wonderful.

Ingredients For violet's fudge cake

  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 4 Tbsp
    cocoa
  • 2 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 2 lg
    eggs
  • 2 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 c
    sour milk
  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • PECAN FUDGE FROSTING
  • 3/4 c
    butter, softened
  • 3 Tbsp
    cocoa
  • 5 Tbsp
    milk
  • 1
    box powdered sugar plus 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla

How To Make violet's fudge cake

    In a mixing bowl, combine ingredients and add 1 cup boiling water last. Mix well. grease and flour 2 9 inch cake pans, bake at 350 degrees 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool completely on wire racks.

    For the frosting; In a saucepan add the butter, cocoa and milk. Bring to a boil for 1 minute then add; powder sugar mixture and vanilla; stir until smooth and creamy.
