Here's a old recipe that is very good. Grandma made this one from memory and wrote down the instructions for me. In the 1940's this was a birthday cake or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients For saucepan cake (from the 1940's)

2squares semi-sweet chocolate

1/2 tspsalt

1 Tbspbutter

1 csugar
-
1 craisins
-
1 1/2 cwater

1 1/2 cflour
-
1 tspbaking soda
-
1/2 tspnutmeg

1/2 tspcinnamon

1/4 tspground cloves
-
whipped cream
How To Make saucepan cake (from the 1940's)

1Combine chocolate, salt, butter, sugar, raisins, and water in a heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a full boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and then cook for 5 minutes at a simmer without stirring. Remove from heat and let stand 15 minutes.

2Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. At the end of the 15 minutes setting time for chocolate mixture stir dry ingredients into chocolate mixture. Fold in nuts. Do not beat. Only stir until mixed. Pour batter into a greased 8 inch square pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Serve warm with whipped cream.
