I've been making this cake for over 40 years and it is so easy and moist. It's not a "pretty" cake but it is oh so good. A great cake for gatherings, very portable, and not overly sweet and it is always a big hit. I never have any left to bring home.

Ingredients For roman apple cake

  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 c
    butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 c
    milk
  • 1
    egg
  • 2 c
    apples, peeled and finely chopped
  • TOPPING:
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 tsp
    flour
  • 2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 c
    nuts, finely chopped

How To Make roman apple cake

    Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a large mixing bowl.

    Blend in sugar, butter/margarine, milk, egg, and apple. Mix on medium speed.

    Pour into greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  • 4
    Cream together all the topping ingredients. Sprinkle over cake batter.

    Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until done.
