Mother's recipe, with a unique frosting, daughters favorite birthday treat. The frosting is what makes this cake, the cream cheese option is too heavy & sweet.

Ingredients For red velvet cake

  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 1 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 2
    eggs
  • 2 Tbsp
    cocoa, unsweetened
  • 2 oz
    red food coloring
  • 1 c
    commercial buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c
    sifted cake flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp
    vinegar

How To Make red velvet cake

  • 1
    Cream butter and sugar until very smooth then add eggs one at a time beating until well blended. Make a paste of the cocoa and red food color. Add it to the above mixture beating until well blended.

    Add buttermilk, salt, and vanilla alternating with flour to the above mixture. After combining all together beat it vigorously, as in BEAT,BEAT,BEAT. Mix soda and vinegar, it bubbles; fold into the above mixture.

    Bake in 2 9 inch deep or 3 shallow layer pans. Grease bottom of pans lightly. 30-35minutes at 350. See frosting directions next
