I got this recipe from a co-worker back in the summer of 1999. She had gotten it from her mother-in-law. Wherever I go for a pitch in I make this and someone always asks for the recipe. It's the best bread recipe I've ever had sometimes I make a little extra glaze for the top. It is so easy to make the only hard part is waiting to have a slice of it!

Ingredients For poppy seed bread cake

  • 3 c
    all purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 1/2 c
    milk
  • 1 1/8 c
    cooking oil
  • 3
    eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    almond extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    butter flavoring
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
    poppy seeds
  • GLAZE
  • 3/4 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp
    butter flavoring
  • 1/2 tsp
    almond extract
  • 1/2 tsp
    vanilla extract

How To Make poppy seed bread cake

    Grease 2 loaf pans and set oven temp to 350
  • 2
    Stir all indgredients (except glaze ingredients) together with a spoon for 2 minutes.

    Pour into greased pans bake in 350 oven for approx. 1 hour until toothpick inserted comes out clean.

    When loaves are done baking let them cool for 10-15 minutes. While loaves are cooling stir together glaze ingredients.

    Poke holes all over tops of loaves, and spoon glaze over both til gone. Let set until completely cool before removing them from the pans.

    Cut each loaf down the center and then in slices side to side.

    The best way to serve the bread is to wrap each pan tightly in foil and let set out overnight before serving
