These are a wonderful holiday cookie to add with the traditional cookies. Topped with the coarse sprinkling sugar in holiday colors or the use of colored sugar gives this cookie a very festive appearance.

These sugar cookies will be a colorful addition to your holiday cookie tray. They are fluffy with a crunchy sugary crust and have a mild orange spice flavor. The cardamom and ginger mixed together give a warmth to the cookie and complement the orange perfectly. These cookies are completely addictive!

Ingredients For orange spice cookies

  • 1 c
    granulated sugar
  • 1 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1 c
    butter, softened
  • 1 c
    vegetable shortening
  • 2 lg
    eggs
  • 4 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp
    grated orange peel
  • 1 tsp
    cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp
    ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 c
    coarse sprinkling sugar (holiday colors optional) or granulated sugar

How To Make orange spice cookies

  • Granulated sugar, powdered sugar, butter, shortening, and eggs in a bowl.

    In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 c granulated sugar, 1 c powdered sugar, butter, shortening, and eggs. Beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.
  • Four, orange peel, cream of tartar, baking soda, cardamom, ginger, and salt in a bowl.

    Add flour, peel, cream of tartar, baking soda, cardamom, ginger, and salt to a separate bowl.
  • Adding flour mixture to butter/sugar mixture.

    Slowly add flour to sugar/butter mixture. Beat at low speed until soft dough forms.
  • Covering dough to chill.

    Cover with plastic wrap and chill 1 to 2 hours or until firm.
  • Dough shaped into balls.

    Heat oven to 350 degrees. Shape dough into 1 inch balls.
  • Rolling dough into colored sugar.

    Roll balls in sprinkling sugar or granulated sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
  • Flattening the dough with a glass.

    Flatten balls with bottom of a drinking glass.
  • Cleaning the bottom of the glass.

    Wipe the glass with a damp cloth to prevent sticking.
  • Ready to bake the cookies.

    Bake for 12 to 13 minutes or until light golden brown.
  • Cookies cooling on the baking sheet.

    Let cool for 1 minute before removing from cookie sheet. Cool completely before storing.
