This recipe was handed down to me from my Great Grandmother (see picture). This is the original recipe, I've revised mine a little bit, but mainly because of the lard. I cook it in a 9X11 pan and it NEVER fails for me. Take it out of the oven, split in half and put butter on it and taste a small bit of heaven!!!!!

1/2 csugar

1/2 cbutter and lard mixed (1/4 each)

1 lgegg

1 cmolasses (the stronger, the better the outcome)

2 1/2 call purpose flour

1 1/2 tspbaking soda

1 tspcinnamon

1 tspginger

1/2 tspcloves
-
1/2 tspsalt

1 chot water

1Mix all ingredients until smooth, pour into greased and floured 9/11 baking pan for approx. 50-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
