Every year an elderly lady who attended my husband's church would make his family a walnut cake at Christmas time. After she passed, the job fell to me. Of course, she shelled the walnuts to make her cake but I take the easy way out and buy them already shelled.

Ingredients For mrs. turner's christmas walnut cake
- CAKE:

1/2 cbutter, softened

1/2 cshortening

2 csugar
-
4eggs
-
3 1/2 call purpose flour

2 tspbaking soda
-
1/2 tspsalt
-
1 1/2 cbuttermilk

2 tsppure vanilla extract
-
1 1/2 cground walnuts
- FROSTING:

2 pkgcream cheese - 1 8 oz. and 1 3 oz., softened

3/4 cbutter, softened
-
5 - 5 1/2 cconfectioners' sugar

1 1/2 tsppure vanilla extract

1/3 cfinely chopped walnuts
How To Make mrs. turner's christmas walnut cake

1Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar.

3Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.

4Combine flour, baking soda and salt in another bowl.

5Add to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk and vanilla. Beat on low speed just until combined.

6Stir in the ground walnuts.

7Pour into 3 greased and floured 9 inch round cake pans.

8Bake for 20 - 25 minutes until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

9Cool for 5 minutes, then remove from pans to a wire rack and cool completely.

10For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter in a mixing bowl. Add sugar; mix well. Add vanilla; beat until smooth. Spread between layers and over top and sides of cake. Sprinkle with walnuts. Store in refrigerator.
