Cut butter into pieces and place in large bowl of electric mixer with the sugar. Cream for 2 minutes until sugar grains are dissolved. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each. Whisk together flour, powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with chocolate syrup. Add vanilla, and mix well. Pour into greased and floured 9x13. Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees (the cake was done when it still looked like it was coking, but sprang back to the touch in the center as on the edges). Allow to cool on wire rack for 10 minutes while preparing topping.   Topping- Measure sugar and butter into med saucepan. Whisk in milk and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil 2 1/2 minutes, then stir in chips until melted. Pour over cake while still warm. Sprinkle with optional ingredients if desired. Barb put leftovers in fridge and served her book club 3 days later with pecans chopped on top. She said it went like wildfire and tasted as fresh as the day it was baked.   Made this Jan 2, 2009 to celebrate with Poppa and BaBa. She served on the 5th...puffs up like a souffle when cooking, flattens to thickness of a brownie as it cools. The frosting is like pudding or custard-good alone but we all decided it would be better with nuts. What about mini MandM candy or reese pieces?
