My mom makes this cake every New Year. You slice the cake from oldest to youngest and that is the piece they eat. If you find the hidden coin, you will have good luck for the year.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

What a fun New Year's Day cake! It's moist, light and flavorful. The perfect treat to start the new year. A slice would go nicely with a cup of coffee or tea.

How To Make greek new year's cake

  • Cream butter and egg yolks.
    1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream the butter, sugar, and egg yolks together in a large bowl.
  • Adding flour, baking powder, baking soda, orange juice, and anise.
    2
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Add half the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix. Then 1/3 cup orange juice; mix. Repeat with remaining flour mixture and orange juice.
  • Folding egg whites into the batter.
    3
In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until fluffy. Fold into the batter.
  • Adding batter to a baking pan.
    4
Transfer to a greased pan (I use a 10 inch spring-form pan), place a dime wrapped in tin foil into the batter, and place in oven. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Sprinkling sesame seeds onto the cake.

When the cake raises and sets a little, brush with egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds on top, then continue to bake.
