According to my mom, her father was a fine cook who prepared Sunday dinners every week. This is the only one of his recipes that she still has. This one is dated 20 April 1966. I've rearranged it so that ingredients are listed in order of use.

  • SIFT TOGETHER IN A MEDIUM BOWL
  • 1 1/4 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • CREAM TOGETHER IN A MIXING BOWL
  • 1 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    shortening
  • ADD TO MIXTURE
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2
    eggs
  • MIX TOGETHER IN A BOWL
  • 1/2 c
    milk
  • 1/2 c
    sour cream
  • ADD TO MIXTURE
  • 2
    bananas, crushed
  • TOP WITH
  • 3/4 c
    walnuts, chopped

How To Make grandfather scott's banana cake

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 9" cake pans. Set aside.

    Mix baking soda, salt, and flour in a medium bowl. Sift. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs; mix well. Add flour mixture and milk mixture alternately, mixing well after each addition. Fold in bananas. Pour into prepared pans.

    Bake 40-45 minutes in preheated oven.
