My mother use to make a gingerbread cake every Christmas. This recipe was handed down from my grandmother who was a pastry chef.

Ingredients For gingerbread cake

  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 c
    molasses
  • 3 c
    cake flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    ginger powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves
  • 3/4 c
    hot water

How To Make gingerbread cake

  • 1
    Pre heat oven to 375. Beat together the shortening and sugar until creamy.

    Beat in egg and molasses.
  • 3
    Mix all the dry ingredients together before adding to the top four ingredients. Mix until moist. Add hot water and beat until very creamy.

    Pour batter into a grease and flour 8 x 8 baking pan.
