Doreen Simpson shared this recipe with me in 1976. It's moist and really tasty. Plus the chocolate chips on top are like free frosting without the trouble. Wonderful picnic cake bc you can hold it in your hand to eat.

Ingredients For diane's chocolate chip date cake

  • STEP 1
  • 1 c
    cut-up dates
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 c
    hot water
  • STEP 2
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • STEP 3
  • 2 lg
    eggs
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 c
    plain flour
  • 1 Tbsp
    cocoa, unsweetened
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • STEP 4
  • 1 pkg
    12 oz. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c
    chopped nuts

How To Make diane's chocolate chip date cake

    Grease and flour a 9x13 sheet pan. Preheat oven to 350*.

    Mix and let cool ingredients in step 1. When cool stir in 1/2 package chocolate chips.

    Cream ingredients in step 2.
  • 4
    Add to creamed mixture all ingredients in step 3. Pour into pan. Sprinkle 1/2 pkg. chocolate chips and 1/2 C. chopped nuts over top of batter.
