I got this recipe today from a card playing group. Even though she left the topping off it was so delicious with a scoop of ice cream. Moist and very chocolaty, this is great for any occasion.

Ingredients For chocolate date cake

  • 1 c
    dates, halved
  • 1 c
    boiling water
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 c
    granulated sugar
  • 1 c
    shortening or butter
  • 2 tsp
    cocoa powder
  • 2 lg
    eggs
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 c
    all-purpose flour
  • TOPPING
  • 1 pkg
    chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c
    granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c
    nuts

How To Make chocolate date cake

    Mix the dates with the boiling water and add the baking soda. Let cool.

    Mix sugar, shortening, and cocoa powder.

    Add eggs, vanilla, and flour.

    Mix with date mixture.

    Scoop into an 8x8 or 9x9 pan lined with parchment paper.

    Add topping ingredients over the cake in pan.

    Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
