Someone said that baking cakes with buttermilk is good. I just found this cake recipe in a 1982 newspaper clipping. Happy baking!

Ingredients For buttermilk oatmeal cake
- CAKE:

2 cflour

1/8 tspsalt

1 1/2 tspcinnamon

1 tspallspice

1 tspbaking soda

1 csugar
-
1/2 cdark brown sugar

1 cvegetable oil
-
1 cbuttermilk
-
3eggs
-
1 cpecans, in pieces
-
1 1/2 ccoconut, flaked

1 coatmeal, uncooked
-
1/2 cdates, finely chopped
- TOPPING:
-
3/4 cbuttermilk
-
1/2 csugar
-
1/4 cdark brown sugar
-
2 Tbspdark corn syrup (karo)

1 tspbaking soda
-
1 tspvanilla
-
1/2 stickoleo or butter
How To Make buttermilk oatmeal cake

1Combine flour and other dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add oil, buttermilk, eggs and sugars. Beat until smooth. Stir in the nuts, oatmeal, coconut and dates. Pour into a greased and floured 10" tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

2Topping: In medium sauce pan combine topping ingredients. Cook until the mixture comes to a rolling boil and becomes bubbly. Remove cake from oven when done and immediately pour mixture over the cake. Do not remove from the pan until cake is cool.
