This is the ultimate icing for decorating cakes. It is not too sweet and you can add different flavorings to go with any cake.

Ingredients For buttercream icing

  • 1/2 c
    salted butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 c
    butter flavored crisco
  • 1 Tbsp
    vanilla flavoring ( or your favorite flavor)
  • 1 lb
    box of powdered sugar
  • 2-4 Tbsp
    milk
  • paste food coloring, as desired

How To Make buttercream icing

  • 1
    Cream butter and crisco until smooth, add vanilla or whatever flavoring you like.

    Beat in powdered sugar one cup at a time until it resembles coarse crumbs.

    Add milk a little at a time until desired consistency. If you are coloring it, add small amounts of paste color until you get the color you want. Remember the colors deepen as it sits.

    If you are decorating with tips, you want the icing a little stiffer than if you are just icing a cake or cupcakes.
