This is an old south recipe, this version comes from Domino Sugar. My mom made it during the 60's and 70's.

Ingredients For brown sugar chocolate cake or cupcakes

1/2 cshortening

2 cdark brown sugar

4 lgeggs

2 ozchocolate, unsweetened squares, melted and cooled

21/2 cflour, sifted

1 1/2 tspbaking soda

1 tspsalt

1 1/2 cbuttermilk
How To Make brown sugar chocolate cake or cupcakes

1Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In mixer bowl, Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time. Stir in vanilla. Add melted, cooled chocolate. Mix until combined.

2In a seperate bowl, sift together the flour,soda and salt. Add to the batter, alternating with the buttermilk.

3Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans, or use paper liners for cupcakes.Divide batter evenly between the pans or liners. Bake in a 325 F. degree oven for 40 minuitesd for layers, or 20 min. for one pan of cupcakes at a time. Toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean, but do not overbake. Set pans on cooling wire racks for 10 minuites before removing. Cool before frosting, about 30 min.

4Frosting: 1/2 Cup butter 3 oz of cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled. Combine butter, cream cheese, vanilla and with electric mixer, beat until light and fluffy. Add sugar slowly on low speed. Stir in milk and melted chocolate. Frost cooled cakes thickly.
