This is a bonus recipe for the oats layer cake family of recipes. The flavor is black forest and the frosting is a delicious white chocolate.

Ingredients For black forest oats layer cake

  • 3 c
    rolled oats, divided
  • 3/4 c
    semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c
    cherry pie filling, divided
  • 1 c
    chilled chocolate milk
  • 1 box
    chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 3/4 c
    water
  • 1/4 c
    vegetable oil
  • 4 lg
    eggs
  • 1 pkg
    instant chocolate pudding mix (3.9 oz)
  • 4 Tbsp
    margarine, divided
  • 1 jar
    maraschino cherries, quartered, juice drained and 1/2 cup reserved (6 oz)
  • 1/2 c
    hot fudge sauce
  • 8 oz
    white chocolate bar, chopped
  • 1 tsp
    cream of tartar
  • 3/4 c
    half and half
  • 1 c
    heavy cream
  • 8 oz
    cream cheese, softened

How To Make black forest oats layer cake

    In a medium jar, combine 1 cup rolled oats, semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup cherry pie filling and chocolate milk. Using a fork, stir together for 2 minutes until blended.

    Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat two 9" round cake pans with cooking spray.

    In a large bowl, combine cake mix, water, vegetable oil, eggs and pudding mix. Beat at low speed for 3 minutes.

    Add the chocolate-cherry oat mixture into the cake batter and beat again on medium speed for 30 minutes.

    Pour into the cake pans. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted the center comes out clean. Cool completely for 8 minutes.

    Heat 2 tablespoons margarine in a large deep skillet over medium-low heat. Add remaining rolled oats and sliced maraschino cherries and saute for 5 minutes or until set.

    Remove from heat. Stir in hot fudge sauce. Set aside.

    Heat remaining margarine in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk chopped white chocolate and cream of tartar together for 2 minutes until smooth. Slowly stir in half and half. Remove from heat.

    In a medium bowl, combine heavy cream, melted white chocolate mixture, cream cheese and reserved cherry juice; mix well for 5 minutes or until blended.

    Place a layer of cake on a serving plate. Spread half the frosting onto the cake evenly. Add sauteed oat mixture onto the frosting.

    Place a second cake on top. Spread remaining frosting on the top and sides of the cake. Top with remaining cherry pie filling.
