I got this recipe from my grandma. With the cloves it is a unique taste.

Ingredients For 1917 war cake

  • 1 c
    corn syrup
  • 1 c
    cold water
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves
  • 1 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 2 Tbsp
    oil
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder

How To Make 1917 war cake

    Put corn syrup,cold water, salt, cloves and nutmeg in saucepan and cook for 3 minutes till it reaches a boil.

    Add oil and when cool add soda dissolved in a little hot water in a bowl.

    Mix flour and baking powder and add to ingredients. Stir well.

    Pour into greased tube pan or 13x9" pan and bake for one hour at 325 degrees. Check for doneness till its golden brown.
